TCN Explains Ongoing Power Outages In Northern Nigeria

TCN Explains Ongoing Power Outages In Northern NigeriaThe Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) revealed on Tuesday that ongoing power outages in several northern regions stem from faults in its 330kV Ugwaji–Apir Double Circuit transmission lines 1 and 2.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement, TCN’s General Manager for Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, noted that these outages have primarily affected communities in the North-east, North-west, and parts of North-central Nigeria.
Mbah explained that at approximately 4:53 a.m. on Monday, the Ugwuaji–Markurdi 330kV Line 2 tripped, leading to a transfer of 243 MW to Line 1, which subsequently also tripped at 4:58 a.m., resulting in a total power loss of 468 MW.
Efforts were made to restore the lines shortly after the incidents, but both lines tripped again due to the same relay indication. In response, two teams of linesmen were deployed—one from the Apir Transmission Sub-region and another from Enugu—to expedite fault tracing along the 215 km route, which includes 245 transmission towers.
While the Apir team patrolled the line throughout Monday, they encountered challenging terrain and were unable to locate the fault. The Enugu team faced delays due to a ‘sit-at-home’ order in the South-east on October 21 and 22, which hampered their progress and affected vehicle refueling for the long-distance line tracing.
However, security arrangements were made to assist the team, who resumed fault tracing on Tuesday morning.
Although TCN has restored supply to the 132kV transmission line from New Haven to Apir, the 330kV lines remain offline, severely impacting power supply across much of Northern Nigeria. Additionally, the Shiroro-Mando transmission line is down due to security issues, exacerbating the outages in the region.
Mbah emphasized TCN’s commitment to identifying the cause of the outages to enable repairs and restore power. She apologized to the government and electricity consumers in the affected states, acknowledging that challenging conditions, including swamps, rivers, and security risks, hindered their efforts. The teams have resumed fault tracing in collaboration with security operatives to address the issues promptly.
