This revelation comes amidst widespread concerns about the acute shortage of educators nationwide.

Recently, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) voiced its distress over the shortfall of teachers in public schools. As reported by Sunday PUNCH, there are currently over 47 million students enrolled in a total of 171,027 primary and junior secondary schools, both public and private, across the country. UBEC indicated that public schools number 79,775, while private schools total 91,252.

In terms of staffing, UBEC reported that 354,651 teachers are engaged in early childhood education facilities, 915,593 are employed in primary schools, and 416,291 are serving in junior secondary schools.

Similarly, the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has recently highlighted significant concerns regarding the dearth of qualified teachers in Nigeria. The council emphasized that the scarcity is particularly acute in rural areas, exacerbating educational disparities.

Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, the Registrar of TRCN, addressed these issues in an interview with Sunday PUNCH.
