In a recent interview, the 74-year-old film icon shared that her late husband, who once supported her passion during their courtship, became abusive after marriage when she refused to abandon her career in the film industry.

According to her, things changed dramatically after they tied the knot. While he had once proudly watched her rehearse and encouraged her work, his attitude shifted, and he began to resent her continued involvement in Nollywood.

“While we were dating, he was very supportive. He even came to watch me rehearse. But after marriage, he no longer agreed with it,” she recalled. “Each time I returned from a movie set, I risked being beaten because he had warned me to stop acting.”

Iya Awero revealed that the marriage was short-lived as her husband passed away at a young age. Following his death, she chose not to remarry, expressing a deep reluctance to face the uncertainties of a new relationship.

“I never remarried because I didn’t want to face the unknown again,” she added, reflecting on her decision to remain single after the painful experience.
