In a statement on Monday, the NLC reaffirmed its firm stance against the increase, emphasizing that it adds unnecessary financial strain on already struggling Nigerians.
The tariff adjustment, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), permits network operators to increase charges by up to 50%—a figure significantly lower than the over 100% hike initially requested by some telecom providers. The NCC stated that the decision was made in consideration of industry reforms aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability.
Despite this, the approval has sparked widespread opposition, with the NLC among the key stakeholders rejecting the move. The labour union had initially planned nationwide protests but was persuaded by the government to put them on hold following negotiations.
However, the NLC remains resolute in its opposition to the tariff hike. In a post on its official account, the union declared: “United we stand against telecoms exploitation. Say no to telecom tariff hike.”
