According to a statement from the EFCC on Friday, the convicts are Emmanuel Cyriacus, Nelson Yustus, Gabriel Victor Shindu, Daniel Gambo, Miracle Bukar, Mighty Awarri, Jonathan James, Mathias Adams, Sani Safiyanu, and Muazu Shira.

Shindu, Awarri, Gambo, Bukar, Adams, Yustus, Cyriacus, and James were arraigned on October 16, 2024, before Justices Hammed Isha and Benjamin Lawal at the Gombe State High Court in Yola, Adamawa State. Safiyanu faced charges on October 14, 2024, for intent to defraud and possession of fraudulent documents before Justice Mushkur Salisu at the Federal High Court in Jalingo, Taraba State. Muazu Shira was arraigned for intent to defraud on October 8, 2024, before Justice Muazu Abubakar of the Bauchi State High Court.

Yustus was convicted for impersonating an individual named “Jake” from Philadelphia, USA, to defraud a foreign national of $150. Safiyanu was found guilty of possessing fake appointment letters intended for distribution to unsuspecting victims, falsely claiming employment with the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme and other government bodies.

All defendants pleaded guilty upon arraignment, leading prosecution counsel Saad H. Saad to request appropriate sentencing. Defense counsel urged the court for leniency, highlighting the defendants’ remorse.

Justice Isha sentenced Shindu, Awarri, Bukar, and Gambo to ten years in prison or a fine of N300,000 each. Justice Lawal handed ten-year sentences to Yustus, James, and Cyriacus, with an option of a N200,000 fine each. Justice Salisu sentenced Safiyanu to six years or a N250,000 fine, while Adams received a five-year sentence or a N200,000 fine. Justice Abubakar sentenced Muazu Shira to two years in prison or a N200,000 fine.
