The sentencing took place at the Lydenburg Regional Court in Mpumalanga on Monday, October 28, 2024. The name of the convicted individual has been withheld to protect the identity of the victim.

The court was informed that in May 2022, four friends, including a 44-year-old woman, gathered for drinks after a funeral in Lydenburg. As the evening progressed, the victim felt fatigued and decided to return home. The group dropped her off before heading back for more entertainment; the victim’s husband secured the house upon their departure, as explained by Colonel Donald Mdhluli, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga provincial police.

During the trial, it emerged that the 39-year-old man chose to return to the victim’s home after dropping her off, leaving his friend at the entertainment venue. He managed to acquire the house keys and entered the room where the woman was sleeping.

“It was during this time that the accused raped the victim,” Mdhluli stated.

Following the incident, the matter was reported to the police, and the specialized Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit initiated an investigation that led to the man’s arrest.

The accused appeared in court multiple times before ultimately receiving a 10-year sentence on October 28, 2024.

“Thanks to the Lydenburg Regional Court for ensuring that justice was served,” Mdhluli added.

In a statement, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, the acting provincial police commissioner in Mpumalanga, commended the “exceptional work” of the investigators, prosecutors, and judiciary involved in the case.

“We are committed to tackling gender-based violence, and we are pleased whenever perpetrators of these heinous crimes are removed from society for an extended period, as in this case,” Mkhwanazi said.
