Obuah revealed that the contractor had engaged in the destruction of streetlights to secure new contracts. While he refrained from disclosing the contractor’s identity, he emphasized that the company associated with the expatriate is widely recognized. He assured the public that the suspect would face the full extent of the law.
“The minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has directed us to ensure that Abuja is adequately illuminated. As part of this initiative, I conducted a site assessment with my team to ensure everything is functioning correctly,” Obuah stated.
Abuja has been divided into 21 zones, and during the inspection, nearly 18 zones were reviewed. Obuah noted that many areas have suffered from vandalism, although some are currently receiving intervention from his team. He expressed dissatisfaction with the level of damage observed but praised his team for their efforts, particularly the ongoing maintenance work on Yar’Adua Way and in the Jabi area, where some lights have been restored, though others remain non-functional.
“Within a short period, we will address these issues,” he assured. “Previously, we believed that scavengers or miscreants were primarily responsible for the vandalism. However, today’s findings reveal that high-level contractors are also sabotaging the commendable work of the minister and the AMMC.”
He confirmed the arrest of the prominent expatriate contractor, stating, “We have collected substantial evidence against the contractor, who is now in detention. Our report will be forwarded to the minister, and we will ensure that those responsible for the vandalism, as well as those purchasing the stolen materials, are held accountable.”
Obuah emphasized the need for a collaborative effort to prevent such sabotage, stating, “It is unacceptable to continue purchasing and installing streetlights while individuals, including expatriates, are involved in vandalizing them.”
