Tension At AGF’s Office As Lawyers Demand Mele Kyari Probe
A large number of legal practitioners gathered at the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) at the Ministry of Justice in Abuja on Wednesday, April 23, demanding an immediate probe into the activities of former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The lawyers, acting under the banner of the Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, reaffirmed their commitment to combating corruption—particularly within Nigeria’s oil sector.
In a petition jointly signed by Barrister Emmanuel Agada and Jonathan Uchendu, the group voiced serious concerns over the numerous corruption allegations linked to Kyari’s time at the helm of NNPCL, criticizing what they described as his “opaque” style of governance.
The petition highlighted irregularities surrounding the rehabilitation and restreaming of government-owned refineries, pointing out that vast sums were spent with questionable financial transparency.
One major case cited was the involvement of Matrix Energy Limited, which reportedly invested $400 million in the Port Harcourt Refinery project—despite an earlier $1.5 billion approval by the Federal Executive Council for the same repairs.
They further alleged that NNPCL owes Matrix Energy over $2 billion, with the debt being offset through crude oil allocations that have yet to be settled.
The legal group urged the AGF to initiate a comprehensive review of all contracts and agreements entered into by NNPCL under Kyari’s leadership. They also demanded a full-scale investigation into the transactions and the establishment of a commission of inquiry to examine the refinery rehabilitation process during his tenure.
The protesting lawyers vowed to continue their advocacy until Kyari is held accountable and the truth is brought to light.
“The Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law firmly believe that uncovering the truth in this matter will enable the Federal Government to explain how public funds were expended on the controversial refinery repairs under Kyari’s leadership,” the petition read.
“In light of the above, we urge the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to urgently review all agreements executed by NNPCL during the tenure of Mele Kyari.”
