Providing insight into the incident via a post on X.com on Thursday, Delta State Police spokesperson, SP Edafe Bright, explained that the confrontation began when police officers were transporting a suspect caught with substances suspected to be codeine, Indian hemp, and Canadian loud.

According to Edafe, the situation escalated when Air Force personnel, reportedly familiar with the suspect, intercepted the officers at the checkpoint and insisted on his release.

He wrote: “Policemen attached to QRS were transporting a suspect found in possession of substances suspected to be codeine, Indian hemp, and Canadian loud.

“However, Air Force personnel who happened to know the suspect intercepted them and demanded his release, leading to an unprovoked attack on the officers.”

Describing the incident as unfortunate, Edafe assured the public that measures were being taken to prevent a recurrence.

“This matter is being addressed. We acknowledge the strong relationship between the Delta State Police Command and the Nigerian Air Force. Under the leadership of CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, both security agencies are working together to ensure such an embarrassing incident does not happen again,” he added.
