Tension Erupts: ‘Police Just Exploded Teargas!’ — Ejimakor Alerts Public Amid Protest

The lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, has accused the police of firing teargas to disperse peaceful protesters who gathered in Abuja on Monday.

The demonstrators had converged to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, who has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021. The protest formed part of renewed pressure on the Federal Government to obey court orders granting Kanu freedom.

In a post shared via , Ejimakor alleged that police officers launched teargas canisters into the air as a large crowd assembled in front of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, where the rally was taking place.

He said the incident caused severe irritation to his eyes and throat, writing:

“I’m in front of Transcorp Hilton with a mammoth crowd that gathered for #MNKOct20, and the police just exploded teargas. My eyes and throat hurt. People are scattering everywhere.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has warned against any attempt to attack or invade custodial centres during the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Abubakar Umar, declared that all correctional facilities nationwide have been marked as “Red Zones.”

He said,

“In light of the planned nationwide protest scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, calling for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the public is hereby informed that all correctional centres are declared as RED ZONES.”

The NCoS further appealed to citizens to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, noting that correctional centres are not designated protest venues.
