The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has filed a lawsuit against the State House of Assembly, its Speaker, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and several others over an alleged plot to impeach him.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In the suit, FHC/ABJ/CS/2212/2025, lodged before the Federal High Court in Abuja, Ewhrudjakpo alleged that some members of the State Assembly were being pressured to remove him for refusing to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following Governor Douye Diri’s reported resignation from the party.

Represented by his counsel, Reuben Egwuaba, the deputy governor also claimed that certain local government chairpersons — including Mrs Alice Tange of Sagbama LGA — were facing similar threats of removal for declining to defect alongside the governor.

Presiding over the case, Justice Emeka Nwite, on October 27, ordered all defendants to appear before the court and explain why the interim injunctions sought by the plaintiff should not be granted.

The defendants include the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, its Speaker, the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS), the Attorney General of Bayelsa State, the Chief Judge, and the Clerk of the State Assembly.

In his ruling, Justice Nwite stated that “the interest of justice will be served” by requiring all defendants to show cause before any restraining order is issued. The matter was adjourned to November 13, pending the defendants’ response.

Ewhrudjakpo is seeking several interim orders, including one restraining the defendants from initiating or carrying out any impeachment process against him for refusing to defect from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) or any other political party before the expiration of his tenure.

He further prayed the court to bar the defendants from:

  • Holding any meeting, sitting, or conference aimed at initiating impeachment proceedings against him;

  • Recognizing or appointing any APC member as Deputy Governor in his stead; and

  • Withdrawing his official security protection as the duly elected Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State.

The court is expected to determine whether the deputy governor’s plea for protection from alleged political persecution holds merit when the case resumes in November.
