Tension In Kaduna: Police Shut Down Pro-Peter Obi Rally Over ‘Security Threats

The Kaduna State Police Command has announced it will halt a planned rally by supporters of Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, over fears that it could be hijacked by criminal elements.

Supporters of Obi, popularly known as the Obidients, had intended to organize the rally in celebration of his birthday. However, the police, through a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, warned that any individual or group that defies the directive will face legal consequences.

According to the police, intelligence reports indicate that miscreants are plotting to infiltrate the gathering to incite violence and destabilize public peace. As a precaution, the Command reiterated that all politically motivated rallies and public gatherings are suspended across Kaduna State until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially opens the window for political activities.

The statement further noted that the rally’s timing clashes with scheduled party primaries sanctioned by INEC, which could result in tensions and possible violence. Organizers of the rally were urged to postpone their plans in the interest of safety and public order.

While acknowledging citizens’ rights to association and political expression, the police emphasized their commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state.
