Statutory functions of selecting committee leadership and membership, which should be carried out by the presiding officers of the Senate and House of Representatives, are reportedly being influenced by the Presidency, leaving the House’s committee selection committee redundant.

In response to the perceived unfair treatment in allocating leadership positions, a group named the “Reformation Group” has reportedly been formed by some aggrieved lawmakers, with a lawmaker from the North East allegedly being the founder and financier.

The group is said to be planning to establish a secretariat at an elite hotel in Abuja and rally opposition against the leadership of both chambers.

Tensions are particularly high among lawmakers from the North-Central and South-West geopolitical zones, with discontent over the exclusion of the North-Central from key offices and the dominant role of Lagos State in the South-West power-sharing arrangement. The group’s plans and objectives are expected to be unveiled during the six-week recess commencing on Friday.
