.Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s camp has dismissed the authority of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to summon him over the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the National Assembly.

Speaking in an interview with Punch on Wednesday, Akpabio’s media aide, Eseme Eyiboh, asserted that the matter remains an internal parliamentary affair and does not fall under the jurisdiction of the IPU.

“They have no authority to summon him. This is strictly an internal issue of the National Assembly, and Akpabio is not obligated to honor an IPU invitation,” Eyiboh stated.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, currently serving a six-month suspension, had accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of power. Earlier this week, she escalated her complaint to the IPU, a United Nations agency, seeking its intervention.

Following her appeal, the IPU, through its President Tulia Ackson, assured that the matter would be reviewed after hearing Akpabio’s side, emphasizing the need for procedural fairness.

‘Natasha Disrespects the Rule of Law’ – Eyiboh

Reacting to the development, Eyiboh accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of disregarding legal protocols by bypassing the judicial system and taking her grievances to an international body.

“This shows a blatant disregard for the rule of law. What she is doing is not just contemptuous but also an attempt to tarnish Nigeria’s image, which is quite troubling. The IPU has no jurisdiction over the internal affairs of a sovereign nation like Nigeria,” he stated.

Eyiboh further questioned her motives, asking, “Why abandon the legal process and turn to the IPU? She had already taken her case to court, so why bypass due process? We won’t engage too much in this matter because it is still sub judice.”

Could There Be Further Sanctions?

When asked whether Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions could lead to additional penalties, Eyiboh refrained from making any definitive statements.
