Tension Rises As Police Officers Accused Of Shooting Man In Delta State

The incident reportedly took place on Thursday evening when the officers, alongside anti-cult operatives, stopped the victim on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs.

This development comes amid growing public anger over the recent killing of Oghenemine Ogidi, who was fatally shot by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State.

Reports indicate that the officers accused the man of carrying drugs before allegedly shooting him in the leg. A video from the scene showed bystanders attempting to assist the injured victim, while the officers were said to have fled the area over fears of a possible backlash from local youths.

Reacting to the incident, the Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancements, also known as “No Justice, No Peace,” condemned the act and called for urgent attention from authorities.

The group’s National Coordinator, Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, stressed that the responsibility of the police is to safeguard lives and property, not to harass or harm citizens.

He urged the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, to launch a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are identified and held accountable.

Describing the incident as both unfortunate and unprofessional, the group called for decisive action to prevent further cases of alleged police brutality in the state.
