Tension Rises As Senate Sets Stage For Explosive Tax Overhaul, Rivers Crisis Showdown!

The Senate has declared its intention to collaborate closely with the Executive arm of government to tackle rising socio-political tensions, with a particular focus on resolving the protracted crisis in Rivers State.

In a statement released on Monday ahead of the National Assembly’s plenary resumption, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele emphasized that the Senate aims to mediate among key stakeholders and address the root causes of the crisis, prioritizing national unity and reconciliation.

Upon resumption, the Senate’s immediate focus will be the continuation of deliberations on the 2024 Tax Reform Bills. Senator Bamidele underscored the urgency of passing the reforms, noting that they are vital for modernizing Nigeria’s tax system and boosting revenue generation to enable governments at all levels to deliver critical development projects and fulfill democratic promises.

He stated, “Passing these reforms is crucial to overhauling our tax framework and improving revenue for effective governance across the federation.”

The Senate also voiced deep concern over the renewed wave of insecurity in states like Benue, Borno, Katsina, and Plateau. Bamidele assured that the legislature would intensify its collaboration with security agencies to devise robust strategies for tackling terrorism and restoring peace.

During the legislative recess, the Presidency made various appointments, including nominations for the South-South Development Commission. Senator Bamidele confirmed that the Senate would soon commence screening the nominees to ensure their alignment with national development goals.

He concluded by reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to accelerating the passage of pending bills targeting key economic sectors. He also emphasized that public participation would be encouraged through committee hearings to enrich the legislative process with diverse perspectives.
