Tensions Escalate In Rivers As Eleme LG Secretariat Is Set Ablaze (Video)A portion of the Eleme Local Government secretariat was set ablaze by unknown individuals amidst the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State.
Buildings and vehicles were ignited following an explosion from a device believed to be dynamite.
The incident occurred on Monday, October 7, 2024, just hours after Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun ordered the unsealing of the secretariats of the 23 local governments and the withdrawal of police officers who had been stationed there since July.
Former Ambassador Oji Ngofa, a resident of Eleme, confirmed to Channels TV that the newly elected chairman, Brian Gokpa, arrived at the council secretariat with his councilors and supporters only to find several buildings ablaze.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the police have not issued any statements regarding the incident.
While details remain unclear, the fire follows closely on the heels of the Rivers Local Government Elections, in which the Action Peoples Party (APP) emerged victorious.
