Fubara, who hails from Opobo, insisted that “Ijaw is not complete without Opobo.” The remarks were made in response to insinuations, including comments by former Rivers State governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, suggesting that Opobo people are not Ijaw.
Fubara dismissed such assertions, emphasizing Opobo’s integral role in the Ijaw struggle in the Niger Delta.
He refuted claims of being a non-Ijaw, asserting his status as a true Ijaw son, highlighting Opobo’s historical involvement in the Ijaw struggle alongside Bonny and Kalabari.
