During the operation, security operatives also seized 38 locally made firearms, pellets, and various charms.

Announcing the arrests in Benin on Saturday, ESSC Commandant Friday Ibadin, a retired police commissioner, stated that the suspects were apprehended during a search operation near Eguedion Camp, close to an Army checkpoint along the Benin-Ekpoma-Auchi Road.

Ibadin revealed that 17 of the 18 arrested suspects are non-indigenes and reassured Edo residents of the state government’s commitment to maintaining security, especially as the farming season approaches. He emphasized that the corps will intensify efforts to eliminate criminal elements in Edo State.

“While patrolling the Benin-Auchi Road near Eguedion Camp, close to a military checkpoint, my team spotted two armed individuals. Upon seeing us, they fled, leading us to a camp where 18 suspects were arrested,” Ibadin explained.

He further stated, “Of the 18 arrested, 17 are non-indigenes of Edo, while one is from Agbede. Our team will continue to search the forests and engage local communities to ensure criminals are flushed out. Edo State remains safe and secure for all.”

While handing over the suspects to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Agbede, Ibadin stressed the need for stronger collaboration between the ESSC and other security agencies, highlighting that a unified approach is crucial to effectively combating crime in the state.

This operation follows a directive by Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, instructing security forces to rid the state of criminal elements, ensuring that Edo’s forests and rural areas remain safe for farmers and residents.
