Obasa has reportedly filed a motion at the Ikeja Division of the State High Court, requesting an expedited hearing of his case.
It will be recalled that Obasa was removed in absentia on January 13, 2025, when 32 out of 40 Assembly members voted him out while he was in the United States. President Bola Tinubu described the move as a “coup,” sparking widespread controversy.
The removal has since divided the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, with members split over the legitimacy of the action.
Obasa’s lawsuit, filed on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, names the Lagos State House of Assembly and Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, the newly appointed Speaker, as defendants.
Represented by his legal team, led by Chief Afolabi Fashanu, SAN, Obasa is seeking several reliefs, including:
- An order setting a date for the expedited hearing of his originating summons.
- An order reducing the time frame for the defendants to file their response to seven days after the hearing of this application.
- An order shortening the time within which he may file a reply to three days after receiving the defendants’ responses.
Obasa’s case is based on nine legal grounds, including the interpretation of relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Rules and Standing Orders of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
