TG Omori Opens Up On Failed Kidney Transplant After Brother Became His Donor

Nigerian cinematographer TG Omori has opened up about his difficult kidney transplant journey, revealing that his brother donated a kidney to him during the search for a suitable donor, but the organ was later found to be incompatible.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Omori made the disclosure in a recent interview while recounting the challenges he faced during his treatment. He said his family spent about nine months searching for a suitable donor before his brother eventually volunteered to donate one of his kidneys.

According to the filmmaker, the transplant procedure initially appeared successful, but doctors later discovered that his body was not accepting the donated kidney.

“My brother gave me his kidney after it took us nine months of struggle to find a donor. After the transplant was successful, the doctor told me it wasn’t a match and my body wasn’t accepting it,” Omori said.

He explained that doctors made further attempts to address the problem, but the kidney continued to fail to function properly. He was subsequently taken back into the operating theatre so the donated kidney could be removed, after which he resumed dialysis while recovering.

“The doctor tried again, but it wasn’t responding. So, they had to take me back to the operation theatre to remove it, and I went back on dialysis so I could heal,” he added.

Omori said his family then spent another six months searching for a suitable donor who would be a match for a second transplant.

He disclosed that the second transplant was eventually successful after another donor was found, bringing an end to a prolonged and difficult period of treatment.

However, the filmmaker noted that the experience came at a personal cost to his brother, who had donated one of his kidneys during the first transplant attempt and now has to live with only one kidney.

“After waiting for another six months, we had to find another donor that could match before it turned out successful. Now, my brother has to live with only one kidney,” Omori said.
