In the Foreword of Babangida’s autobiography, A Journey in Service, launched in Abuja on Friday, Gowon revealed that he once considered appointing Babangida as his Aide-de-Camp (ADC) due to his remarkable intellect and professionalism.

Reflecting on Babangida’s tenure, Gowon described it as one of the most outstanding among Nigeria’s military leaders. He praised Babangida’s brilliance, leadership skills, and political acumen, noting that his ability to balance military command with political strategy set him apart.

“At some point, I was so impressed by his intellect and outstanding professionalism that he almost became my Aide-de-Camp,” Gowon wrote. “That story belongs elsewhere, and I will leave him to tell it for the benefit of others who did not have the privilege of proximity to our careers.”

Gowon further lauded Babangida’s ability to blend the qualities of an officer and a gentleman while demonstrating exceptional political sophistication. He asserted that Babangida’s rise to leadership was not accidental but a testament to his capabilities and the role he played in shaping Nigeria’s military and political landscape.
