This private sector think-tank pointed out that despite experiencing consistent economic growth, the country grapples with increasing unemployment, income inequality, and multifaceted poverty.
Olaniyi Yusuf, the Chairman of the NESG board, highlighted the necessity for Nigeria to outline a path that ensures sustained and inter-generational growth.
He emphasized that the nation has faced various economic and political challenges in recent years, underscoring the urgent requirement to revamp its systems and address structural issues.
In response, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, stressed the urgency of setting priorities for the incoming administration scheduled to assume power on May 29, 2023.
He noted that the upcoming summit provides a timely opportunity for a comprehensive national economic review and aims to foster consensus among all Nigerians regarding the crucial importance of actively prioritizing economic growth that can create sustainable employment opportunities, lift millions out of poverty, and enable Nigeria to realize its economic potential.
Senator Bagudu further explained that the theme for this year’s summit, “Pathways to Sustainable Economic Transformation and Inclusion,” was chosen to facilitate discussions on the essential steps required to transform the nation’s economy while ensuring inclusivity.
