In a conversation with Vanguard on Saturday, Ekpoko contended that those criticizing Wike are employing diversionary tactics.

He emphasized that the FCT was constructed using funds derived from the oil resources of the Niger Delta.

Ekpoko highlighted that the FCT is open to all Nigerian citizens, and any qualified individual from the nation can assume the role of its Minister.

He articulated, “Deeming Nyesom Wike from the Niger Delta as unsuitable for the position of FCT Minister is an affront, even though Nigeria financed the FCT’s development from the proceeds of oil originating in the Niger Delta.

“The towering skyscrapers, bridges, flyovers, and other vital infrastructure in the FCT, including Abuja, are built on a foundation of environmental degradation and the exploitation of the Niger Delta community through years of oil exploration on their land. The growth of Abuja has come at the expense of the Niger Delta community.

“I haven’t personally witnessed the video clip, but if it is indeed accurate, then Sheikh Gumi and those who share his perspective have made a misjudgment.

“The FCT, encompassing Abuja, is meant for all Nigerians. Any capable Nigerian, including those from the Niger Delta region, can hold the position of FCT Minister, and Nyesom Wike is well-qualified.

“I wish to commend President Tinubu for appointing Wike, and I believe that going forward, the role of FCT Minister should rotate among the various geopolitical zones to dispel the misconception that it is exclusively the prerogative of the North.
