The Senate, specifically its Committee on Gas, led by Senator Jarigbe Jarigbe, has urged the executive branch to promptly present a 2023 Supplementary Budget to the National Assembly to initiate the Compressed Natural Gas project.

Lawmakers emphasized that such spending should adhere to the established budgetary process, as extra-budgetary spending is not in compliance with the law.

While commending President Tinubu for his CNG initiative, the committee’s chairman stressed that it would be illegal to use taxpayers’ funds without the approval of the National Assembly.

Senators also discouraged any attempts at extra-budgetary expenditure through Ways and Means, asserting their readiness to support and provide relief to the public.

He stated, “This commendable initiative would alleviate the hardships faced by the citizens. Furthermore, the President should prepare a supplementary budget to secure government funding for the entire gas value chain, including the provision for CNG infrastructure and CNG vehicles. Engaging in extra-budgetary expenditure would be inconsistent with legal provisions.”
