The Kaduna State Police Command announced on Wednesday that it has apprehended a trio of internet fraudsters notorious for scamming unsuspecting students at Kaduna State University (KASU) out of their tuition fees. According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Command, ASP Mansir Hassan, the suspects, identified as Muhammad Uthman Busari from Nariya Kaduna, AbdulAzeez Hamza from Hayin Dan-mani Kaduna, and Noel Nims Audiya, have defrauded approximately 300 students, amounting to a total of N60 million……..CONTINUE READING
ASP Mansir elaborated on the modus operandi of the suspects, stating that they specialized in compromising the students’ registration portal. They took advantage of those who opted to pay their fees online instead of using traditional banking platforms. The fraudsters would collect full tuition fees from students but deposit a lesser amount into the State’s Treasury Single Account (TSA). Subsequently, they manipulated electronic transaction receipts from the TSA to falsely indicate complete payment.
The police spokesperson disclosed that the fraudulent activities resulted in a financial loss of over N60 million for more than three hundred KASU students. The principal suspect, Muhammad Uthman Busari, allegedly utilized the ill-gotten gains to construct and furnish a house, purchase a car, acquire electronic appliances and gadgets, and acquire plots of land in both Kaduna and Kwara States.
The suspects have been formally charged and are set to face prosecution in court, according to ASP Mansir. To combat computer-related crimes in the state, the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna, A D Ali, has established a dedicated cybercrime unit. This unit is tasked with investigating offenses related to cybercrime, including but not limited to social media account hacking, fake purchase alerts, deceptive social romance, cryptocurrency/Forex frauds, and other related offenses within the state. Victims of such crimes are encouraged to report them for appropriate action.
