Following a meeting on Tuesday, August 6, the committee, led by Hassan Soweto, Ayoyinka Oni, and Oloye Adeniji, issued a statement detailing the mourning period. It will start on Wednesday, August 7, with an X Space and conclude on Friday, August 9, 2024, with a public symposium and candlelight procession.
The committee urged all Nigerians and supporters of the fight against hunger and hardship to observe the mourning period, which includes wearing black attire, sharing movement graphics on social media, and participating in individual acts of solidarity.
The statement read, “We also encourage participation in collective actions such as tomorrow’s X Space, and the public symposium and candlelight procession on Friday, which will serve as the grand finale.”
The committee cited two main reasons for this action. First, they criticized the Lagos State Government and the Commissioner of Police for failing to protect peaceful protesters, citing recent attacks by state-sponsored thugs at Ojota and Alausa. They alleged that police not only failed to intervene but also participated in the attacks and theft of protesters’ belongings.
Second, the committee accused President Tinubu of exacerbating divisions and violence to maintain power, pointing to the disproportionate killings and arrests of protesters, particularly in the North.
The committee demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the National Coordinator of the Youth Rights Campaign, Adaramoye Michael Lenin, Babatunde Oluajo, and other detained protesters. They also called for the removal of the Inspector General of Police and the establishment of a public inquiry into the violence and destruction during the protests.
The statement concluded by asserting the right of protesters to mourn their dead and continue their peaceful demonstrations while demanding justice and an end to bad governance.
