The Defense Headquarters has confirmed the tragic loss of 15 military personnel during a communal clash in Delta State. Among the casualties were two Majors, one Captain, and 12 soldiers. The incident occurred while they were responding to a distress call amidst a clash between Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State on Thursday.

Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, revealed in a statement on Saturday that the troops, who were on a peace mission to Okuoma community in Bomadi LGA, were ambushed and killed by some community youths. Tragically, the commanding officer leading the reinforcement team was among those who lost their lives.

Gusau stated, “The unfortunate incident occurred when the troops responded to a distress call after the communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities both in Delta State. The reinforcement team led by the Commanding officer was also attacked, leading to the death of the Commanding officer, two Majors, one Captain, and 12 Soldiers.”

General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, has ordered an investigation into the matter, and the incident has been reported to the state government. Gusau mentioned that some suspects have already been apprehended in connection with the attack.

He emphasized the military’s unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security in the country, stating, “However, the military remains focused and committed to its mandate of maintaining peace and security in the country. So far, a few arrests have been made while steps are in place to unravel the motive behind the attack.”

This unfortunate incident adds to previous clashes between the two communities, including a shootout in January 2024 resulting from a land dispute and past conflicts over land and fishing rights in 2023.
