Tinubu Administration Launches Investigation In To Alleged Data Breach Affecting Nigerian Citizens

The Bola Tinubu Administration is presently conducting an inquiry into a purported breach of the National Identity Number (NIN) database of Nigerian citizens.

In an announcement made on Sunday, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) declared its collaboration with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to investigate the alleged breach.

According to reports, a private entity, XpressVerify.com, was found to have gained unauthorized access to the NIN database, obtaining personal details of registered Nigerians. The website was reported to have been monetizing the retrieval of NINs and personal information.

NIMC clarified that while it provides NIN verification services through licensed partners, XpressVerify is not among them. The Chief Executive Officer, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has initiated a thorough investigation into the matter, asserting that no data breach has been recorded thus far.

The commission aims to ascertain if any of its tokenization verification agents, either directly or through sub-licensees, have violated the licensing agreement.

Emphasizing stringent security measures in place to safeguard citizens’ NIN and personal data, NIMC reiterated its commitment to protecting sensitive information.
