Tragic Bauchi House Fire Claims Lives Of Two Siblings As Mother Leaves Them Locked Inside

Tragedy unfolded in the Madina Quarter of Bauchi metropolis as a devastating fire outbreak claimed the lives of two young siblings, Zainab Bashir Muhammad (Hibba) and Ummu Salma Bashir, aged 7 and 5, respectively.

The incident took place at a residence near Barden Gabas Primary School, adjacent to Tirwun quarters, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis, around 11:00 am on Sunday, March 17, 2024.

Reports indicate that the heartbreaking incident occurred while the mother of the deceased children was away on errands, leaving them locked inside the house.

Witnesses recounted their futile attempts to rescue the children as the flames engulfed the house. Despite efforts to forcibly open the gate and gain entry, the intensity of the fire hindered their rescue mission.

One neighbor lamented, “When we entered the house, we tried to force open the room where the children were staying, it was a real fire with heavy dark smoke, making it difficult for us to gain entry.”

Usman Abdullahi (Dan Usmanu), another neighbor, reflected on the tragedy, expressing disbelief as it was unusual for the mother to leave the children unattended during her absence. He mentioned that typically, she entrusted their care to him when she had to step out, given the proximity of their homes.

The husband of the bereaved, Bashir Muhammad, was not present at the time of the incident, leaving unanswered questions regarding the cause of the fire.

Efforts by the state fire service personnel to contain the blaze were commendable, given the risk of it spreading to nearby structures, particularly in the dry season.

Meanwhile, the young victims were laid to rest in accordance with Islamic traditions, marking a somber conclusion to the heartbreaking ordeal.
