The current IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, appointed in June 2023 for a four-year term, is central to this legislative adjustment.

Earlier in July, the Nigeria Police Force denied allegations that IGP Egbetokun had attempted to influence the National Assembly to introduce a bill extending officers’ retirement age.

Under Section 18(8) of the Police Act 2020, Egbetokun, born on September 4, 1964, is set to retire in September 2024 upon reaching the age of 60. This would curtail his tenure to just over a year of his four-year term.

This issue has persisted previously with Egbetokun’s predecessor, Usman Baba, who continued in office beyond the retirement age of 60 until his replacement.

The bill, if enacted, aims to bring clarity and stability to leadership within the Nigerian police force by enabling IGPs to serve their full appointed terms without premature retirement due to age restrictions.
