Keyamo asserted that the decision to move the FAAN headquarters was driven by the potential savings of over N450 million in airfares annually. He mentioned that officials traveling from Abuja to attend meetings in Lagos would no longer incur these costs.
Despite opposition from figures such as Senator Ali Ndume and certain Northern groups, who viewed the move as an attempt to marginalize the North, Keyamo emphasized that the relocation was essential for operational efficiency.
Addressing concerns about President Bola Tinubu’s awareness of the decision, Keyamo stated that he, as the minister, made the decision within his purview.
Highlighting the logistical challenges arising from the previous relocation of aviation agencies to Abuja in 2020, Keyamo stressed the need for an operational hub in Lagos where decision-makers could efficiently conduct meetings. He cited the significant costs incurred in frequent flights between Abuja and Lagos, estimating an annual expenditure of nearly N450 million on flight tickets alone.
Discussing the Nigeria Air project, Keyamo disclosed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating the controversial initiative initiated by his predecessor, Hadi Sirika. He assured the establishment of a proper national carrier and warned of potential public exposure for airlines unjustifiably canceling customers’ flights.
