During his visit, President Tinubu, who also serves as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), provided updates on regional developments at the AU meeting. He highlighted ECOWAS’ achievements and challenges, including progress in counter-terrorism, electoral support, economic integration, humanitarian efforts, education, health, energy, mining, and agriculture.
President Tinubu underscored the activation of a Standby Force to combat terrorism, support for member states in enhancing electoral processes, and efforts to strengthen the free trade area, customs union, and common market. Additionally, he noted ECOWAS’ humanitarian initiatives, including a $9 million allocation to aid vulnerable populations and assistance to frontline member states in fighting terrorism.
Acknowledging the region’s challenges such as geopolitical rivalries, terrorism, food insecurity, climate change, and misinformation, President Tinubu reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to fostering dialogue among member states, promoting unity, and convening a Special Extraordinary Summit on the future of the Community.
On the sidelines of the AU meeting, President Tinubu engaged in bilateral discussions with President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, agreeing to continue collaborating to advance mutual interests.
