Speaking on the NTA Good Morning program ahead of the 2024 National Diaspora Day, she pointed out that countries like India, China, Pakistan, Israel, and Ireland have successfully boosted their economies with diaspora support. Dabiri-Erewa cited the 2023 diaspora remittance report, which indicated $20 billion flowed into Nigeria, suggesting this could substantially mitigate economic issues without relying on loans from institutions like the World Bank or IMF.

She stressed the need to organize and leverage the potential of Nigeria’s diaspora community, which numbers approximately 17 million, according to current data. Dabiri-Erewa advocated for structured engagement to maximize their impact on national development.

Highlighting initiatives by NiDCOM (Nigerians in Diaspora Commission), she mentioned forthcoming programs such as diaspora housing and mortgages tailored for diaspora Nigerians. These initiatives aim to empower diasporas with opportunities like accessing up to ₦50 million for homeownership through mortgages.

Dabiri-Erewa concluded by emphasizing that harnessing the diaspora’s potential in a structured manner could yield greater benefits for Nigeria compared to traditional financial assistance from international bodies like the World Bank and IMF.
