Speaking during a public engagement on youth, religion, and the fight against corruption, as well as the launch of the inter-faith manual and fraud risk assessment project for ministries, departments, and agencies, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, asserted that the association of internet crimes with the entire Nigerian populace lacks statistical evidence and misaligns with the true nature of Nigerian citizens.
Tinubu regretted the longstanding misrepresentation that has linked the entire Nigerian population with internet crimes without proper statistical proof. He argued that Nigerians are meticulous and authentic citizens who make significant contributions to various fields globally.
He stated, “Over the decades, Nigerians have been victims of mislabelling. Such a gross misrepresentation fails to reflect the true essence of our diverse and resilient nation. The association of internet crimes with the entire Nigerian populace lacks statistical evidence and does not align with the sociology of everyday Nigerians.”
Acknowledging the interconnected world where cybercrimes have become a global phenomenon, Tinubu recognized the urgency of addressing internet crimes and other forms of corruption. He assured the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of the government’s support in combating digital offenses.
Tinubu emphasized the importance of the EFCC’s efforts to bring fraudsters to justice, considering it imperative for the overall well-being of society. He highlighted the need for an atmosphere steeped in trust and integrity, fostering open communication channels, and ensuring that law enforcement actions align with justice and accountability.
