Trump, in a Friday post on his Truth Social platform, accused “radical Islamists” of carrying out widespread killings of Christians in Nigeria and declared that the United States “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening.”
Responding on Saturday via his handle, Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees the protection of citizens of all faiths.
He stated, “Nigeria is a democracy built on constitutional protections for religious freedom. Since 2023, our administration has actively engaged with both Christian and Muslim leaders and continues to address security challenges affecting citizens across all regions and faiths.
“The depiction of Nigeria as intolerant does not reflect our reality, nor does it recognize the government’s ongoing efforts to safeguard freedom of religion and belief for all Nigerians.
“Religious freedom and tolerance are central to our national identity and will remain so. Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not condone it.
“Our nation’s constitution guarantees the protection of every citizen, regardless of faith. We remain committed to collaborating with the United States and the international community to strengthen understanding and cooperation in safeguarding all religious communities.”
