Tinubu Government Moves To End Power Subsidy, Signals Major Electricity Shake-Up

The Federal Government has announced plans to phase out electricity subsidy payments from 2027 as part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s power sector.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed the plan on Friday during a media interactive session, where he addressed issues relating to the sector’s growing debt burden and the government’s long-term strategy.

According to Tegbe, the proposed removal of the subsidy will be implemented in a way that protects consumers, stressing that Nigerians will not be denied the benefits of improved electricity services.

He also assured the public that the government has no immediate plans to increase electricity tariffs.

Better Power Supply Promised

The minister expressed confidence that Nigerians would soon witness noticeable improvements in electricity supply, saying the Tinubu administration is intensifying efforts to address the longstanding challenges facing the sector.

Tegbe acknowledged that transforming the power industry would take time but insisted that the government’s ongoing investments and reforms would soon begin to yield results.

“This is a sector with enormous challenges, but this administration is committing substantial resources and effort to fixing them. People may not fully appreciate it now, but they will see the difference very soon,” he said.

He added that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has made significant investments in the electricity sector and remains committed to improving power generation, transmission and distribution across the country.

Despite the hurdles confronting the industry, Tegbe maintained that the government is working tirelessly to deliver more reliable electricity to households and businesses nationwide.
