Fagbemi highlighted the need for Nigeria’s legal framework to address both national and global challenges. He stated, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, recognizes the concerns surrounding the current state of our laws and the urgent need for a review. Our laws must evolve to keep pace with developments not just nationally but globally. To achieve rapid progress in all aspects of our socio-economic and political life, we need empowering and enabling legislation. Hence, the Federal Government has set up a working group to review the Laws of the Federation.”
Olawale Fapohunda (SAN), former Attorney General of Ekiti State, has been appointed to lead this working group. Fapohunda is widely respected for his work in justice sector reforms at both state and federal levels. He played a significant role in the enactment of key laws, including the Judicial Remuneration Act, which raised judicial officers’ salaries by 300%, and other major reforms such as the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and the Police Act.
The last comprehensive review of Nigeria’s laws took place in 2004. The AGF expressed gratitude to Fapohunda and the working group members for their commitment to this task, affirming the government’s dedication to delivering an updated legal framework by the start of the 2025 Legal Year.
