Abuja | 26 May 2025 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart the nation’s capital on Tuesday for Lagos as West African leaders gather to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The week-long activities will anchor on a symbolic reenactment of the 1975 treaty signing at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island, before moving to Eko Hotels & Suites, where President Tinubu—current ECOWAS chairman—will spotlight the bloc’s achievements and future priorities.

Former External Affairs Minister and NIIA Chair, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, is scheduled to give a keynote review of ECOWAS’s five-decade journey, after which a panel of regional experts will dissect the organisation’s milestones and challenges. Nigeria’s former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), the only surviving signatory to the original declaration, will attend all sessions and address participants at Eko Hotels. ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Touray will deliver the welcome address.
