Tinubu made these comments during a meeting with the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr., at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Emphasizing the role of protests in a democratic society, President Tinubu acknowledged their importance but emphasized that violence and property destruction will not be tolerated by any government.

“Our relationship with the United States is longstanding and robust. We share a commitment to democracy and freedom, with past U.S. diplomats like Ambassador Howard Jeter playing a significant role in our democratic transition,” Tinubu stated. “We look forward to deepening our cooperation on shared goals and democratic values.”

Reflecting on his past activism, Tinubu recounted, “During the military era, I was involved in peaceful protests against dictatorship, always avoiding violence and property damage. Our efforts have contributed to 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, and I am committed to preserving it.”

The President reaffirmed his stance on protest, declaring, “While we support the right to protest, we will not condone demonstrations that lead to violence and destruction.”
