According to multiple presidential sources who spoke with Punch, the decision comes after a closed-door reconciliation meeting held Thursday night at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Also in attendance were the suspended Speaker of the Rivers Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and several lawmakers from the crisis-hit state.
President Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all 32 members of the State Assembly. The suspension was attributed to escalating insecurity, including pipeline vandalism and militant activities, which the federal government said were not adequately addressed by the state administration.
The crisis began in October 2023 with a fierce political feud between Fubara and Wike, leading to impeachment attempts by 27 pro-Wike lawmakers and a collapse in state governance.
Though Fubara’s suspension was initially set to last until September, sources within the Presidency say Tinubu is eager to restore stability to the oil-rich state. “Fubara is pleased with the peace agreement facilitated by the President,” a source said. “In fact, he and Wike were recently seen together exchanging pleasantries. The deal for Fubara’s return is already finalized.”
The President reportedly informed Fubara during the meeting that he should begin preparations to return to office once Tinubu returns from his diplomatic trip to Saint Lucia and Brazil.
Addressing speculations that Fubara’s reinstatement might be tied to a resignation plan, a senior presidential official dismissed the rumour. “That’s false. No such condition was presented. As with all peace processes, there are terms, but resignation was never discussed,” the source clarified.
Another insider emphasized the urgency of the resolution, noting, “The President understands that Rivers cannot afford prolonged political instability. While peace is being restored, it comes with difficult compromises for Fubara.”
Signaling signs of reconciliation, former lawmaker and PDP chieftain Ogbonna Nwuke confirmed that Governor Fubara has ordered the suspension of all political support groups involved in the conflict.
“Yes, he directed that all groups be put on hold. The goal is reunification. We were all part of the New Rivers Vision, and now that peace is in sight, there must be reconciliation,” Nwuke stated.
