Trump, the Republican candidate for the November 5, 2024 presidential election, was swiftly escorted off stage by Secret Service agents following the attack.
The FBI identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect in the assassination attempt.
Tinubu reacted strongly, stating, “The attack on former President Donald Trump is unacceptable and undermines democratic principles. Violence has no place in democracy. I extend my condolences to the former President, the family of the deceased, and wish a swift recovery to the injured. Nigeria stands in solidarity with the United States during this time.”
Leaders worldwide condemned the act of political violence. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed being “deeply shocked” and reiterated that “political violence has no place in a democracy.” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the shooting “despicable,” emphasizing its threat to democracy.
