The All Progressives Congress (APC) aims to leverage the ongoing turmoil within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State as the September 21 governorship election approaches. Recently, the PDP expelled former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu and National Vice Chairman for the South-South, Dan Orbih, over alleged anti-party activities. The PDP maintains that these expulsions will not impact its prospects in the upcoming election.
However, the APC sees the removal of these prominent figures as a positive development for their candidate, Senator Monday Okphebolo. Tenebe expressed confidence that the party would explore all avenues to benefit from the PDP’s crisis, potentially even inviting the expelled members to join the APC.
“Every party wants to capitalize on the misfortunes of another during elections,” Tenebe remarked, highlighting the significance of retaining capable members within political parties. He noted that losing influential figures like Orbih and Shaibu could destabilize the PDP, giving the APC a strategic advantage.
Okoebor-Benson echoed this sentiment, asserting that the APC is in a favorable position leading up to the election. She claimed that with the current political dynamics, the APC is poised to win, citing widespread dissatisfaction with Governor Obaseki’s administration.
In contrast, the PDP’s governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, countered these assertions. PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, acknowledged that while some members disagreed with the expulsions, he believes they won’t significantly affect the election outcome. He criticized Shaibu’s approach but lamented Orbih’s loss, recognizing his political influence.
Abdullahi noted the complexities of party loyalty and the challenges faced by members in the current political landscape, emphasizing that internal conflicts should be handled with care to maintain party unity.
