The president’s decision was communicated in a letter presented on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday. According to Channels TV, the Retirement Age Bill was initially postponed in February 2024 for further research and consultations with stakeholders after a considerable number of senators opposed it.

Originally introduced during the 7th Assembly, the bill was passed to the 9th Assembly, where it faced delays, before finally reaching the 10th Senate.

In his letter, President Tinubu stated: “I write, in respect of the Harmonized Retirement Age for the Legislative Officers. Upon thorough examination and careful consideration, I have decided to withhold my assent to the bill. This decision is made by the powers vested in me by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He expressed appreciation for the Senate’s diligent work in drafting and considering the bill, and he urged understanding regarding his decision. “Please accept the assurances of my highest regard,” he concluded.
