The President made the statement on Wednesday in a post on his verified account, two days after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the reforms.
Tinubu described the changes as the most far-reaching overhaul of the NYSC since the scheme was established in 1973, saying they reflect his administration’s commitment to expanding opportunities for Nigerian youths.
According to the President, one of the promises he made upon assuming office was to place young people and women at the centre of his administration’s policies, adding that the NYSC reforms represent a key step toward fulfilling that commitment.
“On Monday, at the Federal Executive Council, our administration approved the most consequential reforms of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme since its establishment in 1973.
“On the day I was sworn in as your President, I promised to create meaningful opportunities for our young people. I said women and youth would feature prominently in our administration, and this reform is partly the actualisation of that promise,” he stated.
Tinubu acknowledged the NYSC’s long-standing role in fostering national unity over the past five decades but stressed that the country’s evolving economic realities require the scheme to adapt to new challenges.
He noted that while the programme’s nation-building objective remains important, it must also focus on preparing graduates with relevant skills needed in today’s economy.
The President expressed confidence that the reforms would transform the NYSC into a more impactful platform by prioritising practical skills acquisition, productivity and meaningful contributions to national development.
