Tinubu Slams Atiku: Time To Move Past Envy And False HopesPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to stop undermining his administration and instead focus on addressing the ongoing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Tinubu’s statement, released on Sunday through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, criticized Atiku’s continued attacks and urged him to abandon his “grand illusions” and misplaced envy.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Onanuga, speaking on behalf of the President, argued that Atiku’s recent economic analysis reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of Nigeria’s current realities. The statement pointed out that the PDP leader has been more focused on undermining Tinubu than resolving the challenges within his own party, particularly following its electoral defeat in 2023.
According to the President’s spokesman, Atiku’s failure to win the presidency after multiple attempts has led to resentment toward Tinubu’s leadership. He also criticized Atiku’s economic proposals, which were rejected by voters in the last election, as unrealistic and disconnected from the immediate needs of Nigeria’s economy.
“Since his loss in the 2023 election, Atiku has shown more interest in discrediting President Tinubu than in addressing the implosion within the PDP,” Onanuga said. “It is evident that Atiku’s proposals lack popular appeal, and simply repackaging them will not solve the systemic issues his party left behind after 16 years in power.”
The statement also took aim at Atiku’s proposed approach to governance, particularly his suggestion of a consultation period upon assuming office, which the President’s camp described as unrealistic given Nigeria’s urgent economic challenges. Tinubu’s government, Onanuga emphasized, came prepared with a robust action plan to tackle the country’s economic woes.
“Atiku’s suggestion of prolonged town hall meetings and consultations would have delayed necessary reforms and further worsened Nigeria’s economic situation. The nation needed decisive leadership, and President Tinubu took immediate action,” he said.
In particular, the statement highlighted the steps the Tinubu administration has taken to address the fuel subsidy issue, pointing out that Atiku’s critiques ignore the dire fiscal situation the country faced, with the fuel subsidy absorbing an unsustainable portion of the budget.
Onanuga also referenced Atiku’s past, accusing him of overseeing the sale of national assets to private individuals at undervalued prices during his tenure as vice president. In contrast, the Tinubu administration is focused on revitalizing national assets, such as the refineries, rather than selling them off.
Regarding corruption allegations, the statement called out Atiku for criticizing the current administration’s efforts on the fuel subsidy, despite his own entanglement in corruption cases, including those involving his wife and a former U.S. congressman.
The statement concluded by urging Atiku to stop indulging in “imaginary scenarios” and focus on more constructive discourse. It also reiterated Tinubu’s commitment to the reforms necessary to propel Nigeria forward, including the ongoing social intervention programs, the removal of the fuel subsidy, and efforts to address the country’s foreign exchange challenges.
“Rather than peddling economic fantasies, Atiku should focus on the pressing issues facing Nigeria,” Onanuga stated. “Nigerians have already rejected his approach, and it is time for him to accept the realities of the political landscape.
