Kaduna, Nigeria — Comrade Tosin Adeyanju, the Executive Secretary and CEO of the National Lottery Trust Fund (NLTF), has urged state governments to lift bans on lottery operations, highlighting the potential benefits for funding essential social initiatives. He made this call at the Regional Conference on Climate Change-Induced Conflicts in Northern Nigeria, organized by the Kaduna State Bureau of Interfaith in collaboration with the humanitarian group, International Alert.
Adeyanju emphasized the positive impact of lottery proceeds, which are directed towards “GOOD CAUSES” like water access, environmental protection, education, sports, agriculture, health, and humanitarian efforts. He clarified misconceptions about the lottery, stating, “There’s a lot of misinformation about lottery. What we do is GOOD CAUSES, which we fund through lottery proceeds directed to the Federal Government.”
Addressing climate change, Adeyanju pointed out that the gaming industry can be a resource for tackling the issues driving conflict in Northern Nigeria. He noted, “The gaming industry…can be leveraged to address some issues surrounding the climate change-induced crisis ravaging northern Nigeria.”
He called on states that have restricted lottery operations to reconsider, arguing that embracing regulated lottery operations could reduce youth criminality and enhance state resources to combat climate-related challenges. Adeyanju also shared that many communities have already benefitted from lottery-funded initiatives, adding, “By reconsidering their decisions, [states] will help to reduce criminality among the youth.”
The conference brought together high-profile attendees, including Kaduna State Governor Sen. Uba Sani, Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar II, and the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Most Reverend Dr. D.C. Okoh. Their presence underscored the critical focus on climate change and the potential role of lottery revenue in advancing local development and stability.
