Tragedy At Benue IDP Camp As 23-Year-Old Woman D!es After Giving Birth To Twins

A 23-year-old woman, Mrs Seember Rochas, has died after giving birth to twin boys at the Ortese Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Benue State.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the woman’s husband, 27-year-old Mende Rochas, said his wife successfully delivered the twins but died about two hours later after developing complications.

Mende said his wife went into labour at about 7:00 p.m. on September 9, at a time when staff at the camp’s makeshift health facility had already closed for the day.

According to him, Seember had received antenatal care at the facility throughout her pregnancy. However, when she went into labour, there was no medical personnel available to attend to her.

“There is a makeshift health stand at the camp where pregnant women receive antenatal care. But my wife went into labour around 7:00 p.m., when the staff had already closed for the day,” he said.

The bereaved husband said his wife eventually delivered the two babies inside the camp without medical assistance. He added that she developed complications after the delivery and died at about 9:00 p.m.

He further explained that there was nobody available to provide the medical attention his wife urgently required following the birth.

The newborns, both boys, remain at the IDP camp, where some elderly women have reportedly been helping their father care for them following their mother’s death.

Mende said camp officials initially supplied some baby food to support the newborns, but the provisions have since run out, leaving the family in need of further assistance.
