Tragedy Strikes Edo As Suspected Cultists Leave Three Dead

In a renewed outbreak of violence in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, three individuals lost their lives on the night of January 21, 2024, as a result of a clash between rival cult groups. According to reports from the Nigerian Tribune, the most recent victims, identified as Denco and Ariba, met their untimely demise at a drinking parlour located at Igun junction by Igbesanmwan and Oza street off Sokponba Road in Benin. Denco was confronted by the assailants at the drinking joint, while Ariba was killed in his own room after leaving his doors open, having become intoxicated.

The tragic events continued with the third victim being fatally attacked in the 2nd East Circular area later that same Sunday night, bringing the total casualties to three. Additionally, a middle-aged man was shot dead inside his car along Upper Siluko road by Textile Mill junction. This incident was attributed to suspected cultists seeking revenge for the loss of their members during the violent clashes in December.

The victim, yet to be identified, was driving along the road when the assailants fired bullets through his side wheel screen, resulting in his immediate death. Despite these alarming occurrences, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, SP Chidi Nwanbuzor, stated that he has not yet received detailed briefings on these incidents.

SP Nwanbuzor emphasized the need to await the official reports from the crime scenes before making any statements. He mentioned, “Not until we see our report coming from there (scene of crime), I will not be able to make a statement I don’t know about. Whatever I would say will be from the report that is coming from that place.” The situation remains a cause for concern, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in addressing and curbing cult-related violence in the region.
