Firefighters conducting rescue operations managed to save a woman from the rubble of the Dubrovnik Hotel in Villa Gesell, located 350 kilometers south of Buenos Aires. The building crumbled in the early hours of Tuesday, October 29, according to local officials.
Reports indicate that some of those trapped may be workers from a construction site allegedly operating without municipal permits at the hotel. An 80-year-old man was confirmed dead, while an elderly woman was rescued alive, as reported by local newspaper Pagina 12, citing provincial security minister Javier Alonso.
Mr. Alonso stated that there were no guests at the hotel, but workers were staying in another section of the building, which was originally constructed in 1986.
Over 300 firefighters, police, and rescue personnel have been deployed to the scene, with the operation ongoing for more than eight hours. The city’s mayor, Gustavo Barrera, warned that a nearby building is also at risk of collapse.
Local officials revealed that they had previously detected and halted unauthorized construction work within the hotel back in August. A prosecutor has since launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse, and the Villa Gesell municipality issued a statement confirming that the hotel was undergoing renovations without the necessary permits.
Additionally, Mr. Alonso mentioned that the courts have ordered the arrest of four individuals connected to the incident.
